Are you familiar with the spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura quinquecarinata)?

When we think of “iguanas,” we usually imagine large lizards over a meter long. But this species is smaller. We're talking about 12-14 inches long with the tail. Its spiny tail makes it look like a Uromastyx. It's pretty calm and easy to handle, although it can run really fast if it feels threatened.

What kind of terrarium should you get?

This animal needs to move around and likes to climb. It therefore needs a terrarium that is large and tall enough for it to climb and perch on branches. We recommend a terrarium measuring at least 40“ x 22” x 24". (The dimensions can of course be different, but the surface area must be equivalent or larger).

Heat and humidity:

It lives in dry tropical and subtropical forests. Basically, it needs an environment with average humidity (around 50%) and a high temperature of 32 to 40 degrees Celsius in its hot spot and a cold spot around 27 degrees. UVB 10.0 light is necessary for its well-being.

What should you put in your terrarium?

Hiding places and things to climb on: branches, cork bark, foliage, etc. If you put real plants in, make sure they are not toxic. We have a good variety of safe plants in store! The substrate should allow your pet to dig: Reptisoil, coconut fiber, wood chips, or even clay. We have a wide selection of substrates in stock and will be happy to advise you based on the look you want and your needs.

Diet:

Mainly vegetarian. Fruit, vegetables, leaves, flowers.

The iguanas we have loved small fruits such as blueberries and raspberries, as well as bananas, zucchini, cucumbers, and grated carrots.

Coloring:

Our iguana's base color is black with a slight brown tint. Depending on the time of day or its mood, bright green spots that reflect the light appear on its back. A magnificent specimen!

Handling:

Fairly easy to handle. It can be very fast if it doesn't want to be picked up or if it feels threatened.
